MLO CE Deadlines Vary Per State

For the majority of states, the official NMLS Continuing Education (CE) deadline is December 31st

Several state agencies regulating mortgage loan originator licenses require CE to be finished well before December 31st:

  • October 31st: Georgia

  • November 1st: District of Columbia, West Virginia

  • November 30th: Kentucky, South Carolina (DCA)

  • December 1st: Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Puerto Rico, Vermont

  • December 15th: Washington, Utah (DRE)

Completing CE right on any deadline is risky because course providers legally can take up to 7 days to report completed hours to the NMLS system, which can cause your license to lapse on January 1st. 24hourEDU reports hours the very next day after you complete a CE course, even on weekends.

Reminder Emails About Your CE Status

The NMLS will send out reminder emails to all current licensed MLOs who have not completed their annual CE starting in July.  More reminders are sent through late summer, fall, and early winter.

It is a best practice to complete your continuing education right away so there are no bumps in the road come renwal time.

  • First Application Window Opens: November 1st. This is the earliest date you can log into your NMLS account and submit your official renewal request and fees.

  • Standard Renewal Cutoff: December 31st. All renewal requests and required attestations must be submitted to prevent your license from expiring.

  • Late Reinstatement Window: January 1st – February 28th/29th. If you miss the December 31st deadline, your license expires. Some states allow a late “reinstatement” window during these two months, but you will pay late fees and cannot originate loans until the renewal process is complete.

How to Renew you MLO License After your Hours are Reported to the NMLS

Log into your NMLS account and navigate to the license renewal section, where you’ll find your completed CE requirements automatically reflected in your record. This 11-page NMLS Handbook Downloadable PDF File will provide you with step by step instructions to Renew Your MLO License

Next, you’ll need to pay the required renewal fees, which vary by state, and update any personal or employment information that may have changed during the license period. Most states require renewal by December 31st, though deadlines can vary, so it’s essential to check your specific state requirements and complete the process before your license expires. The NMLS system will guide you through each step, and once approved, your renewed license status will be updated in the database, allowing you to continue originating mortgage loans without interruption.
