Complete the 20-hour SAFE Comprehensive Course
One of the primary requirements for obtaining your MLO license is completing a 20-hour SAFE pre-licensure education course from an approved provider. Fortunately, many providers offer this course in various formats, including online courses that are instructor led online, allowing you to study at home on a computer or laptop. Pass the SAFE MLO Test
After completing the 20-hour education course, you will need to pass the SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator Test. This comprehensive exam assesses your knowledge of mortgage industry regulations, ethics, lending standards, and more. Submit Your State Specific NMLS Application
Once you have successfully completed the education requirements and passed the SAFE MLO test, there will be a few more state specific items. You can proceed to work on your application for a MLO license through the NMLS. State Licensing Information
Some states have state-specific education requirements in addition to the 20-hour National course. For example, the state of North Carolina requires an additional 4-hour state specific course in addition to the 20-hour national course for a total of 24 hours.
